A New Beginning

I should really be bursting in maniacal rage right about now, coz I'm feeling like I'm about to explode!!

I just deleted my blog .... ACCIDENTALLY! That's like a month's worth of life.

In as much as I would want to release all my frustrations, I'd rather channel it to a more positive alternative. Like thinking positively

Y*D*P*T*!!!

Well, at least now I can start from scratch in making a better blog coz I have some new ideas to put in ... I'm still mad though

Random Rants : I hate Nursing!

amo lng na ... I'm growing to hate every minute I spend in a school that I find intellectually unstimulating. It's like I'm feeling my brain degrading!

Don't get me wrong, our school is one of the top performin Nursing school in the country and I have some pride in saying that I'm studying there. But its perfectionist ways is slowly turning students into mindless "perfect" robot nurses, forcing us in a bugtaw-kaon-klase-kaon-klase-kaon-tuon-tulog life cycle. Its really annoying, daw wala space for personal development. Maski nlng tani pabay-an nlng nila personal life namun, but NO. Asta dira hilabtan guid. How I wish I was in a more liberal school, like UP ... This school does not fit me at all, dapat proper guid tanan.

It's not just the school, its the people in it as well ... No offense, but I find people there typical and uninteresting (save a few). It's so, I dunno --> fake. They're so NORMAL, which I despise most of all ... They are the most "blind" people I have ever met ....

Graduating will be the best thing that will happen to me in my 4years existence in my university.

Metro Cebu :: Proposals and U/C Part

Thanks guys! yesterday's adsense earnings was $1.93 which is more than what I expected for my first day with adsense. I'm hoping to earn more when my new Iloilo Website goes online

Anyways, on with my post ....

Cebu ... that's a city that gives some mixed feelings in me but I won't dicuss about it now, maybe some other time.

Cebu is considered the Queen City of the South for being the largest economic center outside of Metro Manila (I still think Iloilo has every right to be the Queen City of the South because it is already written in history, a decreee from the Queen of Spain).

Cebu together with surrounding towns and cities constitute Metro Cebu, a wide accepted yet (note) not politically defined metropolitan area. Metro Cebu has a population of 2,118,959 people spread across 1287 square kilometers. It is truly the fastest growing urban center in the country, and I've always been WOWed by projects in their metro, not necessarily because they're world class or anything but because I'm impressed at how well they've developed despite the inefficiancy of givernment. I think, this is something officials in the nat'l gov't and other LGUs need to think about.

Here are some of the projects that are currently propoes or U/C in Metro Cebu

    1. Windland Towers III

    2. Cebu Board Walk

    3. Manros PlazaHotel

    4. Parklane Central

    5. Citylights Garden (Tower III, IV, and V)

    6. Parklane International Hotel

    7. ACT I.T. Mall

    8. Marco Polo Cebu

    9. Golden Prince Suites

    10. Tower Palace Hotel

    11. GV Hotel

    12. Cebu MegaDome

    13. Club Ultima Cebu

    14. International Academy for Film and Television

    15. Tunnel

Just comment if you guys need to know more about these projectsa

    Google Adsense

Finally after 4 tries, Google has accepted my application for adsense. Time to make some money! :D I'll need it to buy a new camera, coz I'm too poor to buy one myself :(

I'll finally be able to practice photography, one of my new found passions. This ofcourse won't just benefit me, because I'll be posting even more pics of Iloilo.

So support this blog by clicking on my ads, hehehe... I sound like i'm begging for your clicks, a big capitalist :D But I really really really need your clicks

    PLEASE!!!

If doesn't convince you, I don't know what will

    Iloilo Online

I have been working on a new website on Iloilo ...

You can still see the first version at this link

I'm always too lazy to update it, so I thought of writing it in PHP ... and so I researched about it and found a nice content management system called CuteNews. I got to finish about 70% of it, then I suddenly decided to use a Blog script for the content management and not use Cute News.

I found out about Word Press, I think its great!!! I'm now learning about how to customize the looks coz I'm really new in this PHP stuff.

So prepare to see a new a better Iloilo Online ...

This time, Im going to put google ads in it (as soon as my application gets approved) so I can make money out of all my efforts in promoting Iloilo :)

The will still be accessed through http://www.iloiloonline.tk URL

    Paraw Regatta

The Iloilo Paraw (sailboat) Regatta, instituted in 1973, is a race among native outriggers in the strait between Guimaras Island and Iloilo City. Called Paraw in the local dialect, these native outriggers faithfully copy in materials and design sailboats which carried to Panay in 1212 AD the first settlers from Borneo who were in search of a peaceful home. The sailboats have survived the centuries and become a vital part of the Ilonggo seafaring life.

The first Iloilo Paraw Regatta was organized by the Iloilo Department of Tourism, the City of Iloilo, the municipalities of Oton, and Jordan and Buenavista in Guimaras, the Philippine Coast Guard, Negros Navigation, the late Antonio de Oteza, Iloilo Boat Club, Panay Amateur Radio Club, Iloilo Jaycees, Anhawan Beach resort and host of others readily welcomed the project and lent a helping hand. Since then, the Iloilo Paraw Regatta has grown both in size and renown. The race has become more exciting, colorful and inevitably a challenge to manage. The primary objective of the regatta is to help develop the local tourism industry and preserve the paraw as a legacy from the earliest period of Ilonggo history. In these times of energy crisis, the paraw as a legacy from the earliest period of Ilonggo history In these times of energy crisis, the paraw becomes more relevant since it doe not need fuel and is practically pollution free.

Celebrated every 3rd Sunday of February. The Regatta is a race among native outriggers in the strait between Iloilo City and Guimaras Island. Instituted in 1973, it reenacts what has been an entertainment for Ilonggos since as early as the late 16th century. Called Paraw in the Ilonggo vernacular, these native outriggers faithfully copy sailboats which carried to Panay the first settlers from Borneo fleeing a tyrannical ruler. The sailboats survived the centuries and have become a vital part of the Ilonggo economic and social life. In the last war, Paraw-borne guerillas like hornets kept enemy offshore and harmless. Until the 1920´s, there had been no season for regattas.

A regatta could take place any time in a year given two or more boustful paraw owners with Guimaras Straigt, always where it was since creation. The Regatta today is an activity every summer, hedged with rules, umpires and kibitzers. But for a seafaring people that Ilonggos are, the sport in the regatta has never died down.

The regatta is race among native outriggers in the straight between Guimaras and Iloilo City. Instituted only in 1973, the regatta reenacts what had been an entertainment for Ilonggos as early as the late sixteenth century. Called "para" in the Ilonggo vernacular, these native outriggers faithfully copy sailboats which carried to Panay the first settlers from Borneo.

    Chinese New Year

The celebration takes a deeper meaning all through the years that the Chinese have planted their roots in Iloilo, said Chusuey. It meant that they have been integrated into the Ilonggo society by their presence in business, politics, academe, arts and culture, as well as religion, yet they remain connected to their Chinese roots.

"We are in reality Filipinos. We are more Filipinos than Chinese," said Chusuey.

Manuel Uy, parish priest for seven years at the Santa Maria Parish, said the celebration rekindled a sense of pride among the Chinese-Ilonggos.

It brought a sense of joy and community to them, Uy said.

The success of the celebration was attributed to the concentration of Chinese families and shops along Iznart, Aldeguer and J.M. Basa Streets.

Chinese families know one another, according to Uy, and it is easy to locate them even if they live outside the commercial district.

Many Chinese-Ilonggos set aside their long-standing row as a result of ideological differences. Far from being homogenous, they are a fractious community torn by loyalties to either mainland China or Taiwan, although they are cautious in openly declaring them.

The community has two competing chambers of commerce, Chinese schools, and firefighting brigades.

For a time, the rivalry between the Sun Yat Sen High School and the Iloilo Central Commercial High School (ICCHS) was so bitter that the alumni could not marry those from the other school. Some of the disgruntled formed a third group.

But Uy, together with Annie Sy, a language teacher at the ICCHS, and Victorio Lo, principal of the Sun Yat Sen High School, said the enmity was slowly fading, and that the two schools were now friendly to each other.

Many third- and fourth-generation Chinese-Ilonggos no longer share the ideological leanings of their parents, having been born and brought up in Iloilo, and known no homeland than the Philippines, said Uy.

Having planted their roots and learning the local culture are a cause of worry among teachers in the two high schools. Their students are no longer fluent in speaking Chinese because it is no longer their first language, or the language spoken in their homes.

Sy and Lo said Chinese was now taught as a second language, much like English. The schools tried to provide a speaking environment no longer found in the homes, both pure Chinese or mixed by way of intermarriages with non-Chinese.

Sy said they encouraged students to learn Chinese for practical reasons. China recently joined the World Trade Organization and learning to speak Chinese is an advantage when dealing with Chinese businessmen.

The Santa Maria Parish also keeps the Chinese-Ilonggos in touch with their roots, integrating rituals and belief systems in the Catholic faith.

One of such rituals is the veneration of Chinese ancestors as a means of showing affection for members of the family. Rather than dismissing it as a superstition, the ritual could be regarded as a practice of honoring family and God, he said.

The Church also allows weddings among Chinese-Ilonggos to include some Chinese wedding rites, such as bowing thrice-before the altar, their parents and between the bride and groom.

"These practices are areas of dialogue on spirituality and community. Iloilo has the third largest number of Chinese business establishments, trade and schools, next to Manila and Cebu," John Omohondro wrote in his 1981 book, "Chinese Merchant Families in Iloilo."

Omohondro traces the Iloilo Chinese connection to the Sung Dynasty (960-1279 AD) when trading between the Chinese and early Filipinos started. Prehispanic gravesites in Oton, 7 km from the city, have yielded Sung and Ming porcelain wares brought by Chinese traders in exchange for local products, like beeswax, abaca hemp, sea shells, and red "sibukaw" dye.

Local historian Rex Salvilla said trading took place at the ancient ports in Araut (now Dumagas), Salog (Jaro), Tabucan (Molo), Ogtong (Oton) and Guibuangan (Guimbal).

The Chinese settlers did not arrive until Spain began colonizing Iloilo in the 16th century. Pursuant to a Spanish royal decree issued on July 17, 1679 by then Governor General Juan de Vargas, the local Chinese established the "parian," or Chinese district, in what is now Avanceña Street in Molo District.

    Business roots

Salvilla said the Chinese presence in Molo gave rise to many Chinese surnames, such as Locsin, Lacson, Consing, Ganzon, Quimsing, Conlu, Uygen, Tiongson, Tionko and Layson.

In the 19th century, when Iloilo was opened to international trade through textile and later sugar imports, Chinese settlers and mestizos started taking active part in trading and export-import business, said Salvilla.

From China came silk and cotton threads which local weavers used in "jusi" and "sinamay" weaving in some 5,000 weaving looms in southern Iloilo. Iloilo became the textile center of the Philippines then.

During the American colonial rule, the Chinese continued to control business, especially sugar trading.
Historians said the present Chinese-Ilonggos were immigrants or descendants of those from Fookien and Kwangtung provinces. The Fookienese comprises about 80 percent of the local Chinese population. The rest are Cantonese, Swatow and Shanghai Chinese. They came to Iloilo to trade, join their relatives or escape political persecution.
